Jennifer Lawrence: 'Nobody can stay beloved forever'

Posted on

Marie Claire

Even without Mystique’s makeup or Katniss’ bow and arrow, Jennifer Lawrence is powerful.

The Oscar winner covers the new issue of Marie Claire, and her accompanying profile (available to read online) is full of real talk about the difficulties of being everyone’s imaginary best friend.

“Nobody can stay beloved forever,” Lawrence explains. “I never believed it, the whole time. I was like, just wait: People are going to get sick of me. My picture is everywhere, my interviews are everywhere; I’m way too annoying because I get on red carpets and I’m really hyper, most likely because I’ve been drinking, and I can’t not photo-bomb somebody if it’s a good opportunity. But it’s something I always tell myself: ‘You need to calm the f— down. You don’t want to constantly be a GIF.'”

If it sounds like Lawrence is getting in touch with her inner Internet Critic, that’s because she is. She cops to Googling herself about once a month, “when she’s in the mood for a cry,” and agrees with the anonymous haters about her proclivity for tripping at awards shows. “I’m trying to do the right thing, waving to the fans, trying to be nice, and there’s a traffic cone,” she explained about her trip at the 2014 Oscars. “The second I hit it, I was laughing, but on the inside I was like, ‘You’re f—ed. They’re totally going to think this is an act.’ If I were Jared Leto, I would completely agree. But trust me, if I was going to plan it, I would have done it at the Golden Globes or the SAGs. I would have never done it at two Oscars in a row. I watch Homeland — I’m craftier than that!…Honestly, I’m just doing my best. But if people want to start the backlash, I’m the captain of that team. As much as you hate me, I’m 10 steps ahead of you.”

It’s hard to read about Lawrence experiencing self-doubt — she also discussed having panic attacks while promoting Hunger Games: Catching Fire — but happily, she also drops winning quips throughout  the profile. From the benefits of a glass of wine to her friends’ amazing nickname for her (Katpiss Neverclean), her print self is just as charming as the GIF-able version she struggles with.

Lawrence usually (and smartly) remains tight-lipped about her personal life, but she got a little silly discussing boyfriend/X-Men co-star Nicholas Hoult this time around. After noting how supportive they are of each other, Marie Claire‘s reporter asked Lawrence if she ever hooked up with Hoult on set…in her full blue Mystique make up. (You’ll never know if you don’t ask.) She dodged the question, but also threw out this nugget: “‘Ha, ha,’ she laughs, shaking a finger at me. ‘No comment.’ Then she gets a slightly devilish look on her face. ‘I will say,’ she allows, ‘it’s complicated to explain touch-ups when you come back from lunch.”

There’s that Lawrence charm.
