For the first time, Fox will air less Glee. The network has trimmed its season order of the musical comedy from 22 to 20 episodes, the network confirmed.
This marks the first time since the show premiered five years ago that it will finish the season with a trimmed order. THR reported that the reason for the shorter order was the production hiatus the cast and crew took last year after the sudden passing of star Cory Monteith. Fox says that’s the reason too. Yet it’s tough to ignore that Glee ratings are also spiraling — the most recent Tuesday episode fell 18 percent to 2.6 million viewers and a mere 0.9 rating among adults 18-49.
Glee fans shouldn’t worry too much, since the show is already renewed for a sixth season. But we would bet on a short order. Still: Given that few thought a scripted musical comedy series would ever work in prime-time, Glee has been remarkable, and recently crossed the 100th episode mark.
