BOAT ANCHOR While some of the additions to this re-cut DVD releaase are hilarious, most force the film to an unnecessary length.

We gave it a C+

Ever since Judd Apatow helped turn comedy filmmaking into a game of absurdist one-upmanship — in which the cameras keep rolling and scenes turn into mini improv sessions — thousands of jokes have been left on the cutting-room floor. And now, because two straight hours of Will Ferrell’s mustachioed windbag Ron Burgundy weren’t enough, director Adam McKay, producer Apatow, and the rest of the Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues team have swept up those celluloid clippings and sprinkled them into a longer R-rated cut that adds in a number of new scenes (most notably an out-of-nowhere musical sequence) and swaps in other takes throughout. The result isn’t just more cursing and less trimmed fat, but an entire alternate-reality version of the film that’s not better or worse, just different. In any case, the movie still plays as a collection of bits and riffs so tenuously assembled that you can almost see the Scotch tape holding it all together. The massive cameo-athon battle royal toward the end remains a showstopper, but at nearly two and a half hours, this cut makes you wish the show stopped a little sooner. C+
