Ellie Goulding, ”Beating Heart”
Voluptuous and throaty, Goulding’s singing stirs up EDM drama to match any DJ’s build or drop. On this ballad, written for the movie Divergent (she contributes more songs to the soundtrack, as well as the heroine’s “musical voice”), she describes a life-and-death romance with human-scale tenderness. A-Nick Catucci

Coldplay, ”Midnight”
As if to bewilder the naysayers who declare Coldplay too bombastic, here’s a surprise single consisting of little more than keyboard hums and Chris Martin’s spooky, distorted croon. Though a sometimes serene exercise in simplicity, it’s a reminder that the British vets are better off going big. A-Kyle Anderson
