Red Rising, one of this year’s best bets to become the next hot franchise, will be getting a sequel on Jan. 13, 2015. Golden Son continues the saga of Darrow, a rebel forged by tragedy, battling to lead his oppressed people to freedom from the overlords of a brutal elitist future built on lies. Now fully embedded among the Gold ruling class, Darrow continues his work to bring down Society from within.
In addition to revealing the cover of Golden Son exclusively to EW, author Pierce Brown teased the events of the second novel below. He doesn’t spoil anything but reveals just enough to answer some of your most burning questions:
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Will anyone find out about Darrow’s secret in book 2?
PIERCE BROWN: Yes. Sadly, Darrow buckles under the pressure and is unable to hide any longer just how fond he is of fresh fruit. As you can imagine, to the Reds of the mines–most of which have never seen the sun–fruit is about as decadent as it gets. He must have strawberries! Or were you referring to a different secret?
Will Darrow return home at all to his colony?
Every hero must return home. Starks to Winterfell. Harry to Privet Drive. Luke Skywalker to Tattoine. Katniss to District twelve. The fun is in seeing how they return. But, then again, Darrow does favor surprises, doesn’t he?
What kind of new environments will we see in book 2?
The Golds have terraformed the planets and moons of the Solar System. With massive resources at their disposal, they make their own playgrounds. We will follow Darrow to Earth’s moon, to other cities on Mars, to moons with oceans sixty miles deep and sea monsters carved for the hunting pleasure of the elite.
How many characters from Darrow’s adventures in the Institute return?
Most, in fact. Each has their part to play in the battle to come. But how much does the loyalty of boys and girls matter in the cold world of men and women?
How does the body count compare between books?
You don’t want me to answer this question.
