Catching Up with Ty Burrell

The ”Modern Family” star, 46, voices the world’s smartest dog in ”Mr. Peabody & Sherman” (in theaters March 7); here’s how he boned up

Vocal Studies
Burrell had long tried and failed to break into voice acting prior to Modern Family. “I can’t tell you how many voice-over auditions I’ve been on,” he recalls, confessing he’s “a terrible mimic. Some actors are great mimics and some are just the worst. I’m the worst.”

Intro To History
Despite playing a genius, Burrell needed a refresher on the film’s historical periods. “At some point, a teacher tried desperately to teach me about all those things, but I don’t think I retained it. Doing the movie, I [thought], ‘Oh, Agamemnon, right, right.'”

Advanced Puns
A love of cringeworthy wordplay links Mr. Peabody with Burrell’s goofy TV dad Phil Dunphy. “Peabody’s weaknesses are irrational — like humor and bad puns,” laughs Burrell. “I think Peabody’s even worse than Phil, which is hard.”
