Edith Gets a Makeover!

The wallflower sister starts to bloom in season 4

Downton‘s fashion plate Lady Mary is taking a backseat in season 4 to an unlikely candidate: her sister, Lady Edith. After Matthew’s death, the often-overlooked wallflower starts traveling to London to escape the gloomy house and pursue her writing career — and gets a makeover along the way. “She’s much more fashionable than Mary is at the beginning of the season,” says costume designer Caroline McCall. “Her clothes are more suggestive.” McCall designed a few of the season 4 dresses — one of which was inspired by a beaded top she found in Paris and a George Barbier illustration to elicit a “gasp moment.” Lady Edith wears it to meet her suitor Michael Gregson, but she won’t flaunt her new style around her parents. “We wanted her to have a completely different look in London than at Downton,” explains McCall. “She hasn’t defined herself yet.”
