So last week’s episode helped me to realize that I actually care about these people, and this week confused/intrigued me. I’m now not only shipping Skyward, but I’m also semi-invested in Skye’s back story, and getting to be the same with Coulson (though not as much). Basically, I’m invested, and I have questions, so let’s get into this, shall we?
Tonight’s episode started underground in Siberia, where Coulson was being taken prisoner. And just as a Sylvester Stallone lookalike showed up to torture him, we learned that Sly himself was a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent — Agent Shaw, to be exact. May and Ward showed up for backup, and the four agents made their way back to the bus, where Simmons extracted intel from Agent Shaw, who looked less like Sly and more like Van Damme in the light. And yes, she literally extracted it from him. It was up his nose. I’ll give you a moment to let that sink in.
And just like that, we were off to The Hub to discuss a mission that only Coulson could know about. It was clearance level 8, a.k.a. super sparkly and special. At The Hub (location classified), which looked a lot like a fancy train station to me, Skye realized that business on the bus was not the same as business in The Hub. Pretty much, she wasn’t allowed to know anything down on earth considering that her clearance level is less than 1. Womp womp.
The lowdown: The mission meant sending two men into South Ossetia, where the “overkill device” was located. Basically, the device sends out sonic vibrations that then trigger all kinds of weapons, even the nuclear kind. It uses your own weapons against you, which is bad news. The two-man team was responsible for crossing the border and disabling the weapon, which meant we needed brains and brawn. Enter my favorite duo of the day: Fitz and Ward.
After running into a little trouble crossing the border — Ward’s Russian contact was dead — the agents ended up hitching a ride under a truck thanks to a technologically advanced sleeping bag (think camouflage). Meanwhile, at The Hub, Skye was growing impatient. She wanted Caulson to drop the clearance level crap and tell her what was going on, and when he refused (even though he didn’t like it), she got Simmons to engage with her in some “Batgirl shenanigans.” Skye wanted to hack the S.H.I.E.L.D. system, which meant Simmons had to do some leg work. Simmons nearly wrecked the mission with her horrible flirting skills, but luckily, the girl was quick with the draw and tranquilized a fellow S.H.I.E.L.D. agent before getting caught. Whatever works, I suppose. Also, did anyone else feel like this was a very twisted S.H.I.E.L.D. version of a double date or something? Skey wanting to check on Ward and Simmons wanting to check on Fitz? I took a moment to enjoy it, at least.
Once in the system, Skye split her time between trying to find out more about her parents and learning that there was no extraction team planned for Fitz and Ward. Good thing May and Coulson were around to complete the one thing better than an extraction team: the cavalry. After Fitz disabled the weapon and kicked one guy in the head, the bus landed and saved our boys from the land of angry Russians.
And after a day of saying “it’s classified” and “trust the system,” Coulson revealed to Skye that he had looked at her file. He told her the person who dropped her off at the orphanage was a female S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, still unidentified. He promised to dig further. It was a sweet moment until he went to May and revealed that he did know why Skye was dropped off. He claimed “some secrets are meant to stay secret,” but what was with the picture of what looked like a dead woman that May was holding? Am I missing something here?
Finally, Coulson made a phone call to try and get his hands on his own death and recovery report only to be turned down because he didn’t have clearance for the file. The man can’t even see his own file? Talk about a crappy system.
So what do you all think Coulson isn’t telling Skye? Is he her father?! (I only partially think that.) And what is Tahiti code for? Help me out in the comments below!
