No one likes to go to work sick, but not all of us have 10,000 people expecting them at the office.
“I’m gonna need your help tonight,” an under-the-weather Justin Timberlake pleaded with the hordes of fans lining Los Angeles’ Hollywood Boulevard on Tuesday night for his Jimmy Kimmel Live! outdoor concert, especially leaning on them for “Mirrors.” “If I’mma do this, I need to hear everyone singing,” he instructed. “I don’t want to see you big-time me. I know this is Hollywood. F— all that.”
The crowd was all too happy to fill in the lyrics when Timberlake needed backup, but the six-song set mostly reiterated just what a pro JT is — in sickness and in health. While the TV audience caught a third of the performance, here are some highlights from our street view:
+ We all know by now that “Cry Me a River” was written about ex-girlfriend Britney Spears, right? Which is why Justin’s candid intro of the song was that much more surprising. “Women are crazy,” he said to the crowd, as if he were just venting to his bros. “Like, f—ing crazy. Sometimes you gotta let ’em know.”
+ But he didn’t take “River” too seriously, transitioning to “Rock Your Body” by saying, “Enough of that emo R&B.”
+ Justin grabbed the cell phone of a (seriously lucky) front-row fan and recorded a selfie video while performing 20/20 Experience 2 of 2 lead single “Take Back the Night.” That needs to be on Vine yesterday.
+ JT is clearly pumped about the just-released “TKO.” Before launching into his latest single, he asked the crowd, “Y’all been listening to the radio? Y’all been streaming that album? Can I play something new? Y’all gonna go buckwild if I play this?!?”
+ The superstar never forgot just how far back the massive crowd stretched down Hollywood Boulevard. “They wanna hear you in the Palisades, come on!” he urged.
+ The man really knows how to exit a stage. “I’m JT,” he said casually after playing “SexyBack,” rewarding fans’ screams for just one more. “I’ve got a feeling I’ll see you soon.”
