Even to those of us who appreciate the difference between a shawl collar and a peaked lapel, on the red carpet most of the male stars become a blur of black and white amid the parade of gowns. Unless they’ve got the cojones to wear a lace jacket, that is.

So let’s take a moment to look back at the guy style — both good and not-so-good — at last night’s Emmys.

“On the grooming side of things, Lewis is having a Lex Luthor moment but the rest of his expertly-fitted look is damn-near heroic,” GQ said of Homeland star Damian Lewis, dressed head to toe in Tom Ford. I couldn’t have said it better myself.

The press release from Giorgio Armani detailing Matt Damon’s ensemble — which was sent out before the actor hit the red carpet — said the actor would be wearing a bow tie with his Armani tux. I’m not sure who was responsible for the last-minute decision to swap it out for a long tie, but whomever it was made the wrong call.

Zachary Quinto wore the hell out of his Givenchy satin trimmed suit. Let this be a lesson to all the guys out there — this is how you do black-on-black.

Breaking Bad‘s Aaron Paul wore a well-tailored, super-skinny tux from Burberry, and he pulled it off.

House of Cards star Kevin Spacey was one of the few men who chose not to wear black, walking the red carpet in a midnight blue Burberry tux.
