Fans tuning in to season 5 may feel like they’re watching a new show: Elena (Nina Dobrev) is officially with Damon (Ian Somerhalder), and she and Caroline (Candice Accola) are now students at nearby Whitmore College; all of which means many new, and very pretty, faces will be joining our Mystic Falls favorites; here, we make some introductions

Nadia, Olga Fonda

The mysterious badass Czech beauty follows Matt (Zach Roerig) home from his steamy summer romance abroad with Rebekah (Claire Holt) in the premiere. Says exec producer Julie Plec, ”We have our hands full in Mystic Falls with people causing trouble.”

Aaron, Shaun Sipos

Introduced in episode 5, the human student with a tragic backstory that rivals Elena’s will become a genuine friend to her. ”Internally, we like to call him the Jordan Catalano of Whitmore,” jokes Plec. ”It’s one of those deep friendships that could be seen as threatening to boyfriends.”

Jesse, Kendrick Sampson

The very sweet, smart human student takes a shine to Caroline as she impatiently awaits the return of Tyler (Michael Trevino). ”As we get to know him, he opens the door to a bigger mystery that’s happening at the college,” says exec producer Caroline Dries.

Silas, Paul Wesley

The face is familiar, but it’s a totally new role for Wesley: He’s now also playing 2,000-year-old Silas, who’s returned to Mystic Falls for sinister reasons Damon can’t figure out. ”I’m getting my revenge for playing droopy, sad Stefan for five years,” Wesley says.
