Prolific novelist and screenwriter Elmore Leonard is currently in a Detroit area hospital, where he is recovering from a stroke he suffered a week ago, according to The Detroit News.
The 87-year-old’s longtime researcher Gregg Sutter tells the paper that Leonard is “doing better every day, and the family is guardedly optimistic. He’s showing great spirit. He’s a fighter, and we’re glad to see that.”
Moreover, the man behind Get Shorty, Out of Sight, and U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens — whose stories inspired the FX series Justified — is “very much into his 46th novel, working very hard.”
Leonard’s most recent book, the Givens novel Raylan, was released in 2012. That same year, he received a Medal for Distinguished Contribution from the National Book Foundation, the body that sponsors the National Book Awards each year.
