Singer Melissa Etheridge, 52, announced in a CNN interview her intention to marry partner and Nurse Jackie creator Linda Wallem, 52, following the Supreme Court rulings in US v. Windsor and Hollingsworth v. Perry.
The Supreme Court deemed the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) unconstitutional and the appeal regarding California’s Proposition 8 amendment to be without grounds. In celebration of the decisions, Etheridge tweeted, “I look forward to exercising my American civil liberties…and getting fully, completely and legally married this year to my true love of over three years, Linda Wallem.”
Etheridge and Wallem have been in a relationship since 2010 after Etheridge announced her separation from Tammy Lynn Michaels. Etheridge and Michaels had a commitment ceremony in 2003 and have two children together. Etheridge has two other children from a previous relationship. Etheridge and Wallem plan to marry in California, where same-sex couples can now be legally married.
