The biggest challenge for stylists Rob Zangardi and Mariel Haenn as they pulled together Shakira’s wardrobe for The Voice? What was underneath her clothes. ”They pretaped auditions when she was seven months pregnant,” explains Haenn. ”She’s known for wearing low-waisted pants and cropped tops, but that’s not something you do when you’re pregnant or have just had a baby.” The duo reveal the secrets behind Shakira’s swivel-chair looks.
”It helps to know what works for TV,” Haenn says of choosing pieces like the crystal-embellished Sarli Couture blazer the coach wore during week 1 of The Voice‘s live rounds. ”We learned a lot through working with Jennifer [Lopez] on American Idol.” One styling challenge that’s unique to The Voice: making sure the clothes don’t clash with the furniture. ”The red chair affects how we style Shakira,” says Zangardi. ”We can’t do bright colors with a red chair because she’d look a little crazy.”
ROCK & ROLL GLAMOUR
”Our first fitting was in Barcelona, where we planned her first 10 outfits. I think we brought 12 trunks of clothes and shoes for her to try on,” remembers Zangardi, who says Roberto Cavalli, Rag & Bone, and Christian Louboutin are among Shakira’s favorite labels. ”Because there are so many looks over a short period of time, we bring in new stuff every week. It gives her the opportunity to try new things. We try to push our clients out of their comfort zone.”
