Cyndi Lauper's 'Girls Just Want to Have Fun' turns 30, gets a music video tribute

Posted on

Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” turns 30 this year, prompting a celebratory music video by a lot of famous girls who love having fun.

Kelly Ripa, Rosie O’Donnell, Whoopi Goldberg, Katie Couric, Holland Taylor, Hoda Kotb, and Kathie Lee Gifford all appear in the new tribute clip, holding high-heeled red boots in an homage to Lauper’s Tony-nominated music and lyrics for Kinky Boots.

Stars from Boots, as well as The Lion King, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, The Phantom of the Opera, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, and Chicago are also featured dancing and lip-syncing to the song — with a particularly enthusiastic performance from 11-year-old Lilla Crawford, the title character in Annie. Watch it below.

Lauper expressed her gratitude for the video to People.com.

“It’s so sweet, I’m crying. The Kinky Boots cast is so funny, and all the other shows participating is the sweetest thing I’ve ever seen.”

Kinky Boots, the musical, is based on the film on the same name — a tale of a shoemaker who gets into the niche field of creating flashy and funky footwear for drag artists. The musical is nominated for 13 additional Tonys including Best Musical.
