Google Doodle celebrates Julius Richard Petri

Posted on

Google Doodle

Google Doodle, in its ongoing quest to educate the world, today celebrates what would have been the 160th birthday of bacteriologist Julius Richard Petri, who is credited with inventing the Petri dish. The dish — for those of you who have been out of junior high for a bit — allowed scientists to examine a specimen like bacteria by creating a shallow, enclosed space that remained contamination-free and pure.

Google honors his work with a homepage Doodle that shows six separate Petri dishes. When users click anywhere on the image, they can see each dish get swabbed, and then see the actual bacteria from a dog, a lock, a plant, and more appear.

Warning: After seeing the results, users may feel a need to Clorox their entire keyboard.
