America Ferrera may return to ABC.
The former Ugly Betty actress’ telenovela project Pedro & Maria is in development at the broadcast network as a potential limited series. Originally developed at MTV three years ago, Pedro & Maria is a modern day twist on Romeo and Juliet. The project is from executive producer Ben Silverman (The Office, The Biggest Loser) through his Electus multimedia studio.
Here’s the pitch: “Pedro and Maria are two opposites cut from the same cloth caught in the trap of forbidden love. He is a second generation Dominican from the mean streets of Washington Heights. She is a Puerto Rican whose parents made millions as real estate developers. It’s a clash of the haves and the have-nots, of Main St vs. Wall St, set against a volatile cultural backdrop that fiercely believes neither side should mix with the other.”
Like Ugly Betty, which Silverman also executive produced, the project is based on a Spanish-format telenovela. Originally the series was conceived as an interactive endeavor that would give audience members the ability to vote and decide on the direction the characters and story lines, though it’s unclear if that’s still part of the format.
ABC announced at its upfront presentation to advertisers this week that it was seeking limited series projects to bridge the winter hiatus for hits like Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal, which will now be clustered into tight runs of all-original episodes for up to 12 weeks in the fall and spring. Pedro & Maria has not been greenlit, let alone scheduled, but it could be a contender for such a slot.
