ABC just greenlit the latest twist in reality show music competition: Celebrities impersonating music icons.
In Sing Your Face Off, a cast of five celebrities each week are physically transformed and trained to perform as a legendary singer, often as somebody who is far older or younger than the celebs. The celebrities will spend hours in the makeup chair and train to mimic the icon’s walk, talk and mannerisms leading up to a live performance in front of the judges and studio audience.
The show is based on the a popular reality format that’s been sold in 20 countries titled Your Face Sounds Familiar (it’s a hit in China and Spain, in particular). Endemol USA produces the show with Georgie Hurford-Jones (America’s Got Talent) as executive producer. ABC has ordered six episodes. There’s no cast or judges yet announced; the show will likely premiere midseason next year.
