Matt Damon, John Krasinski, Frances McDormandGus Van Sant’s film isn’t just ”that movie about fracking,” but a gentle and surprising spin on the activist-movie genre. B+

GANGSTER SQUAD (2013, R)

Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin, Sean Penn, Emma Stone The scenery gets shot up by tommy guns and chewed up by Penn, who plays a psycho gang lord in the period-piece drama. C

THE IMPOSSIBLE (2012, PG-13)

Naomi Watts, Ewan McGregor You may think twice about going on vacation after watching this distressing true story of survival, about a family of tourists in Thailand when the 2004 tsunami strikes. B+

A HAUNTED HOUSE (2013, R)

Marlon Wayans, David Koechner, Nick Swardson With Scary Movie 5 now in theaters without him and his brothers, Wayans makes a new horror spoof, this time taking on Paranormal Activity as his main target. B-
