We gave it a B+

Taken together, Aciman’s three novels form a study in the different faces of all-consuming love: Call Me by Your Name centered on a teen’s gay awakening; Eight White Nights explored the gender politics of a heterosexual romance; and now Harvard Square takes a microscope to a platonic friendship that’s no less intense. An unnamed Harvard student meets Kalaj, a brazen, charismatic cabdriver who upends the student’s core beliefs and leads him on wild antics, including urinating in Walden Pond. As always, Aciman tackles Big Ideas by observing the smallest, most intimate gestures of two people and letting them talk — and his characters talk beautifully. B+
