Outfitting 'Arrow'

What should a modern-day hero wear to bust the bad guys? ”Arrow” put costume designer Colleen Atwood on the case.

The look of Arrow‘s signature crime-fighting suit was so key, producers brought on Oscar-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood (Edward Scissorhands, Alice in Wonderland) solely for that outfit. While Atwood took cues from the pilot script and the comics, she wasn’t afraid to go off book. ”It’s got a little more modernity to it and a little less pointy-shoulder kind of vibe” says Atwood. The designer adds that it was important for the character to look less flashy than a movie superhero, and more human. Also, it had to be flexible. ”It had to fit very precisely,” explains Atwood, who says the leather outfit was designed to stretch. ”When you have that kind of action, you have to make sure stuff really fits so guys can move in it.”
