Kids' Choice Awards host Josh Duhamel on pre-show nerves

Josh Duhamel is not taking his Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards hosting duties lightly — it’s not all fun and slime.

“I’ve never done anything like this before, so I’m a little nervous. I’m trying not to think about the fact that I’m going to be compared to Jack Black and Will Smith and all these guys who I’ve always admired,” Duhamel told EW. “But then again, they hired me for me, so I’m just going to be me.”

The 26th Annual Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards will air  Saturday at 8 p.m. ET, and promises to be another fun romp with celebrity guests including Steve Carell, Kristin Wiig, Amanda Seyfried, Chris Pine, Sandra Bullock, and Neil Patrick Harris, and performances by Christina Aguilera, Ke$ha, and Pitbull. Over 326 million votes have been cast to date. Josh Duhamel sat down with EW to talk about the show, who he’s most excited to meet, and his plans for fatherhood.

Duhamel was scant with details about what we’ll get to see during the broadcast, but he does promise that it’ll be fun. “I truly throw any pride out the window. If I had any trouble getting respect in this business before, wait till you see this,” Duhamel teased. He added: “This is what I love about the Kids’ Choice Awards. They don’t care about that. It’s just fun. It’s about having a good time. I love the fact that Nickelodeon recognized that in me.” As to whether or not he’ll be sharing stage with his wife, Fergie, who is scheduled to make a special appearance, Duhamel gave a coy, “possibly.”

Even though he’ll be appearing alongside a host of huge stars, Duhamel is most excited to work with Los Angeles Lakes center Dwight Howard and Olympian Gabby Douglas. “I’m awe-struck by athletes,” he said. When we asked who out of him, Howard or Douglas would win in a push-up contest, he correctly replied: “I think Gabby would kick all of our a—-. There’s no question.”

Ever the energetic kid at heart, Duhamel is also preparing for his impending fatherhood. Fergie and Duhamel recently announced her pregnancy, and he’s looking forward to that next phase in his life. “We both came from very normal upbringings. And I’m just going to try to make the kid feel as comfortable as possible and make him feel as normal as he  can. I’m going to take him back to North Dakota or Minnesota as much as I can,” Duhamel said. But don’t take the masculine pronoun as hint at the gender. He quickly clarified “him OR her!”

Duhamel’s said that movie theaters weren’t always the most accessible where he grew up, but he does have fond memories of seeing Star Wars, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and Where the Red Fern Grows, which he looks forward to sharing with his child. But, as a nature lover (he recommends that everyone see the documentary Planet Ocean that he narrated) and a biology major in college, Duhamel is going to make the outdoors a priority for his family. “I’ve got a cabin out in the woods, so we’ll definitely be going there a lot,” he said. “It reminds me of where I grew up, and being a kid out in the woods just catching frogs and turtles and salamanders and snakes.”
