'American Idol' ratings dip despite judges spat

Idol Mariah Carey

Fox’s American Idol had its usual Week 2 ratings dipped despite a heavily promoted spat between judges Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj.

Idol racked up 16 million viewers and a 5.4 rating, down 10 percent from last week’s 12th season premiere. During the episode, we learned the judges’ dispute (the same one leaked to the media in October) was sparked by a debate about whether a contestant should feel “forced” to “do the country thing.” Fox ended up choosing to edit out most of the profane exchange that followed.

Overall Fox won the night with Idol out in front. ABC and CBS’ lineup all improved this week in the adult demo (with CSI hitting a season high) and The CW’s lineup held steady.
