After comedian Kathy Griffin pretended to perform oral sex on the CNN anchor during their annual New Year’s Eve coverage, she went on The Late Show with David Letterman to — well, “apologize” would be the wrong word — explain herself.
“If you think this is the part where I’m gonna apologize for trying to go down on Anderson Cooper, you are sorely mistaken,” she said. Watch the video below!
Of course, the whole debacle isn’t all that surprising. Griffin and Cooper have hosted CNN’s New Year’s Eve coverage for six years, and she tends to play the provocateur. In 2009 she dropped an f-bomb on camera, and last year she attempted to strip down to her underwear.
But this year’s incident set the internet ablaze and even sparked a condemnation from the Parents Television Council.
“[Kathy Griffin] has shown increasing contempt for the audience through her obscene and unhinged behavior,” the Council said in a statement. “The onus is now on CNN. Either the network has a policy that allows its on-air talent to fondle a co-anchor’s genitals, or it has a policy that forbids such conduct.”
