Spoiler alert! If you haven’t watched this week’s Covert Affairs episode, “Man in the Middle,” stop reading now! Christopher Gorham, who directed the episode, teases what’s to come.
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: At the end of last week’s episode, we saw that Eyal (Oded Fehr) didn’t tell his boss that Annie was staying at his place. But this week, she got intel delivered there and assumed it was from him. When will we know if he did, in fact, set her up?
CHRISTOPHER GORHAM: We all find out whose side Eyal is on at the end of the day by the end of episode 14 [airing Nov. 6]. But Eyal is a major part of the rest of the season.
It was so sweet when Eyal met Auggie and hugged him, but now, I can’t imagine Auggie being friendly with Eyal if he did betray Annie. There’s a photo of Auggie and Eyal together in the Nov. 20 season finale, “Lady Stardust.” What can you tease about that relationship moving forward?
I think the Auggie and Eyal relationship is one that certainly Oded and I enjoy. [Laughs] It does build a little bit, and it’ll be something that we’ll be able to have fun exploring in the show going forward, as least I certainly hope we can. We’ll see what ends up happening. [Laughs]
You’re being uncharacteristically cagey with us.
It’s because what happens in [next week’s episode] then leads to how their relationship goes for the rest of the season. And then where things are left at the end of the season, they could go a lot of different directions. So it’s mostly cagey because I don’t know long-term what the answer is.
And we’ll be seeing more of the character Khalid Ansari?
Yes. He plays for the rest of the season as well. I think the last two episodes that aired were really about wrapping up the first 10 episodes and getting Annie back into the office. The episode I directed is really the kickoff for the rest of the season. We stir up some big emotional issues, set off some literal explosions, and really get the ball rolling. This story line that we start will wrap up by the end of the year.
And the big question: There’s a photo of Auggie and Annie sitting at the bar together in the Nov. 13 episode, “Quicksand” [pictured]. Will Auggie finally get to tell Annie that he has feelings for her?
Well, they do finally sit down for beers at the beginning of episode 15 [in which Auggie goes to Iraq with Operation Proper Exit], and Auggie does have something very important to tell her, which is not necessarily what everyone’s been waiting for him to tell her. [Laughs] And frankly, I think she’s a little surprised at what the revelation ends up being at that sitdown. But I can assure the audience that they do have the conversation by the end of the season.
