The film is one of two projects centering on Alfred Hitchcock — the other being HBO’s The Girl. Hitchcock stars Anthony Hopkins as the legendary filmmaker, with Scarlett Johansson playing actress Janet Leigh. Based on Stephen Rebello’s book Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho, the movie offers a behind-the-scenes look at the horror film.
Psycho has long been shrouded in controversy due to its then-unprecedented depiction of sexuality and violence. In addition, its legacy has been marred by rumors that a body double was used for Leigh’s infamous shower scene, though Leigh has insisted that she was in the scene the entire time.
By setting a 2012 release date, the movie is effectively tossing its hat into the Oscar race. Hopkins is the most likely cast member to secure a nomination for his portrayal of the quirky director, but Helen Mirren — who plays Hitchcock’s wife Alma Reville — could also be a contender.
Hitchcock also stars Danny Huston, Toni Collette, Jessica Biel, Michael Stuhlbarg and James D’Arcy.
