Mitt Romney, TV junkie: Who knew? A chunk of the leaked “47%” tape is devoted to Romney’s downright shrewd knowledge of which television showcases help and hurt a candidate, and his inside knowledge of which hosts dislike him.
Scroll through to the 9-minute mark on the gift that keeps on giving, and you’ll hear Romney questioned about his media profile. He answers that he’s been on both The Tonight Show and The Late Show but “on Leno more a couple of times than Letterman, so Letterman hates me now, they’re very jealous of each other, as you know.” (Jeez, I wish he was as hip to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as he is to the Leno-Letterman war… )
Romney says he’s been invited onto Saturday Night Live, but has turned it down because “Saturday Night Live has the potential of looking slapstick and not presidential.” Post-Sarah Palin, who can blame Romney for thinking this?
Romney reveals that he knows that he’s been on The View “twice” but that it’s a “high-risk” show, because “of the five women on it only one is conservative, and of the remaining women, four are sharp-tongued and not conservative.” Well, first, Barbara Walters is going to be steamed that Mitt doesn’t think of her as Walters thinks of herself — compweetwy objective! — and, second, Elisabeth Hasselbeck once again proves how invaluable she is for The View‘s bookers.
The candidate is even leery of Kelly Ripa’s show because “Regis is gone” — Mitt knows his TV!
