We’ve come a long way from the days of candybar phones pre-programmed with monophonic versions of “The Entertainer.” These days, anything can be a ringtone — which comes in handy when you’re as pop culture-obsessed as EW’s staff.
Assistant News Director Denise Warner has her phone play the Downton Abbey theme song whenever she gets a call; before that, her cell rang to the tune of Warren G’s “Regulate.” EW.com producer Nika Vagner uses Ryan Gosling reading “Hey girl” memes aloud as her ringtone. (And you can too!) My own ringtone isn’t particularly pop culture-y — it’s a snippet from a Guster song I’ve been using since I was 19 — but my mom programmed her own so that when I call her, it plays “Mambo” from West Side Story. This explains why I turned out the way I did.
So, what’s your own custom ringtone? Read how other EW staffers answered this question, then add your response in the comments. Bonus points for anyone who uses a Stefon quote; points deducted for anything including the word “trampire.”
Darren Franich: “I used to have the original theme for Battlestar Galactica before I built my own ringtone out of the credits music to Dark Knight. I’m so cool, you guys.”
Maane Khatchatourian: “I’ve had Guns N’ Roses’ ‘Sweet Child O’ Mine’ and John Lennon’s ‘Imagine.’ I know, so cliché.”
Breia Brissey: “Current ringtone is the theme to 30 Rock. The song itself is really not that embarrassing. Plus, it’s the perfect length for a ringtone.
“But if we’re confessing things, for a very long time my text alert was the theme to The O.C. So every time I got a text, my phone would sing ‘Californiaaaaaaaa, here we coooommmmeee.’ My roommate hated it. It was worse when I would get multiple texts in a row. Then it would be all: ‘Calif… Calif… Californiaaaaaa’ etc.”
Josh Stillman: “Mine’s a clip from Kanye’s ‘All Falls Down,’ from College Dropout.”
Keith Staskiewicz: “My ringtone’s been the theme from Matlock for about a year now. It’s still awesome.”
Annie Barrett: “Right now mine is the creepy ‘Sci-Fi’ iPhone ringtone that makes everyone want to die, but it used to be a snippet from Kraftwerk’s ‘Computer Love’ that I believe I only created in order to settle a bet with someone that I could figure out how to use GarageBand. (WHO CARES?) I also have Annyong from Arrested Development saying ‘Annyong,’ which is really good for text alerts.”
Nolan Feeney: “‘Baby Boy’ by Beyoncé and Sean Paul was my first ringtone. No regrets.”
Tara Fowler: “I’ve been using the cat who sings the Game of Thrones theme song. It’s my text alert that’s the really great one, though: Chris Hemsworth saying ‘another’ in Thor. Love that man.”
Abby West: “Mary Mary’s ‘God in Me’ — for three years. My daughter kept asking me why I wouldn’t change it.”
Erin Strecker: “For a long time mine was ‘Bad Romance’ by Lady Gaga, because obviously. No one was ever surprised.”
Tanner Stransky: “You know, this isn’t me, but my roommate Brent just downloaded a Honey Boo Boo ringtone — it’s Alana telling you to pick up the phone. Hilarious, trashy, everything.”
