The upcoming second season of New Girl is going to mark a huge new beginning for Jess (Zooey Deschanel)…Jess is getting fired!
But being laid off due to budget cuts will launch the series — and the character — into fresh territory, executive producer Liz Meriwether tells EW. “She’s having to restart her life and figure out who she is and what she wants to do,” she says. “I think we’re going to take our time and figure out what she wants and let her have a moment of questioning who she is, why she’s a teacher, and if that’s really what she wants to do.”
This “chaotic moment” in Jess’ life will give way to lots of job experimentation (hint: shot girl!) and lots of spare time — for men! Yesterday, EW broke the news that Bent alum David Walton has been cast on the show for what Meriwether describes as Jess’ “f—k buddy.” Brilliant.
“Its fun to write this new side of her that’s a little unhinged,” she says. One thing that’s likely to further unhinge her? The arrival of her parents, who are in the process of being cast. Suggestions?
New Girl, which last week racked up pair of Emmy nominations for Deschanel and Max Greenfield and a nomination for Jake Kasdan in the directing category, returns to Fox on Sept. 25.
