We gave it a B

When Marlon Brando was invested in a role, there was no one more mesmerizing. Same holds true even when he wasn’t. Just pop in the new Blu-ray of The Island of Dr. Moreau (1996, Not Rated, 1 hr., 40 mins.), a bat-crap insane update of 1933’s Island of Lost Souls, featuring one of the most delightfully gonzo performances ever committed to celluloid. Brando plays a muumuu-wearing mad scientist with a faceful of Kabuki makeup and a 28-inch-tall Mini-Me sidekick. It isn’t a great film, but Brando is show-stoppingly bizarre. He isn’t just phoning this one in, he’s calling long-distance from Mars. And I’ll happily accept the charges every time. B
