During her psychology internship at Kings County Hospital’s mental wing in Brooklyn, where David ”Son of Sam” Berkowitz once stayed, Lockman decided to take notes for this behind-the-scenes look at the health care system. She got plenty of provocative material, especially from the guy who claimed his wife ate his heart. A former journalist, Lockman delivers fascinating revelations about the ways diagnoses are made in Brooklyn Zoo. But she offers no larger insights about what makes her patients’ minds so troubled, and she lacks a real connection with them. If she went in looking for a greater understanding of mental illness, she ended up settling for a good story. B-
