Reviews of the latest movies in stores, including ”The Astronaut’s Wife,” ”Being Flynn,” and others

The Astronaut’s Wife (1999, R)

Johnny Depp, Charlize Theron When a NASA spaceman returns from orbit, his wife suspects he may have come back…different. The thriller is nothing but mood, and has too few surprises to justify its indulgent pacing. Blu-ray debut. C+

Altered States (1980, R)

William Hurt, Blair Brown This visually assaultive psy-fi trip about the horrors of sensory deprivation ensures that its audience is far from deprived. Watch (in high-def Blu-ray) Hurt’s hubristic, drug-addled researcher as he loses his mind — and then everything else. B+

Being Flynn (2012, R)

Robert De Niro, Paul Dano, Julianne Moore As a crank author found by his son in a homeless shelter, De Niro gives a ranting, shallowly aggressive performance, but he never finds any poetry in his character’s bellicose soul. (Also on iTunes) C

Chariots of Fire (1981, PG)

Ben Cross, Ian Charleson, Ian Holm It’s virtually impossible to think of this film (now on Blu-ray) about two British sprinters in the 1924 Olympics without hearing Vangelis’ iconic score — or picturing men running in slo-mo on a beach. Go ahead, try. See? We told you! A-
