We gave it a B+

Somebody’s sending creepy postcards — ”We want what you have” — to the residents of London’s pricey Pepys Road. That slim mystery serves as the narrative device on which Lanchester hangs a big, vivid, complicated portrait of London on the cusp of the financial crisis. The book suffers from an overabundance of characters and points of view: a currency trader, a Senegalese soccer prodigy, a Banksy-like artist, a Polish contractor, a Hungarian nanny, and on and on and on, making Capital feel both panoramic and a bit shallow. But it’s still a convincing and entertaining look at modern life in urban Britain. B+
