UPDATED: Mindy Kaling has found a new job. A comedy from The Office co-star has received a series order from Fox, along with two other projects.
Kaling’s series, now titled It’s Messy, is about a “young Bridget Jones-type doctor who tries to navigate both her personal and professional lives.” Chris Messina and Ed Weeks co-star. This is the pilot that was developed over at NBC’s studio, but the Peacock passed on the project and Fox snatched it up. The network is rumored to be considering Mindy as a companion for New Girl.
“I love you, Kevin Reilly,” Kaling just tweeted, referring to Fox’s entertainment president.
I’m told this pickup does indeed mean Kaling is leaving The Office. She could, in theory, make a guest appearance, but Fox tends to make exclusive deals with its TV talent so the network would have to be willing to share her (and why would they do that?).
Fox has also ordered two series on the comedy side:
— The Goodwin Games, from the How I Met Your Mother team, is a high-concept comedy starring Becki Newton and Scott Foley, about a father who leaves his fortune to his three children only if they agree to his terms.
— Ben & Kate (formerly Ben Fox Is My Manny), starring Nat Faxon and Dakota Johnson, is about free-spirited young man who moves in with his uptight sister to help out as a nanny to her child, and in the process will help her re-enter the world.
