Murder procedurals Castle and Bones both feature a cop and a best-selling author — or in Bones‘ case an anthropologist-turned-novelist — in a partnership that oozes so much sexual tension it can only lead to one thing. With the end of Castle‘s fourth season airing tonight, we take a look back at where Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) and Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) are in their romantic relationship compared to four years into the Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) and Temperance ‘Bones’ Brennan (Emily Deschanel) pairing. (Leaving alternate realities and coma dreams out of the picture.)
Have they gazed longingly at each other?
Castle — Yes. In every episode.
Bones — Yes. In every episode.
Have they kissed?
Castle — Yes. But it was a fake kiss/distraction so they could escape from criminals in a dark alley.
Bones — Yes. But it was a fake kiss/bribe so Bones’ father and brother could use a conjugal trailer to celebrate Christmas in prison.
Has anyone been shot, leading to a dramatic declaration of feelings?
Castle — Yes. Kate was shot at the end of season 3, despite Castle’s valiant attempt to push her out of the way. He then revealed his love to her.
Bones — Yes. Booth was shot in the second-to-last episode of season 3, when he took a bullet meant for Bones. The FBI decided to fake Seeley’s death but forgot to tell Temperance. Needless to say, she was very upset, and punched Booth when she found out he was alive. (Anger equals love, right?)
Have they said ‘I love you’?
Castle — Yes and no. Richard said it to Kate during the aforementioned shooting and we know he says it again tonight. She has not said it back.
Bones — No. Although you know they totally do.
Have they had sex?
Castle — No. But it looks like they might tonight.
Bones — No. (Remember, coma dreams don’t count.)
So which couple is farther along in their romance? No matter what happens tonight, Castle is the clear winner. It wasn’t until season 5, when Booth declared his true feelings for Brennan and said, “I love you,” while Richard has already made his love known to Kate — twice. Even if the possible “Caskett” sex doesn’t happen (or even if it happens in someone’s head), those two have made more significant steps toward being a couple than Booth and Brennan after the same amount of time. But, Bones is currently in its seventh season and now things have changed — Seeley and Temperance have a baby and are shacking up. It looks like Castle and Beckett have their work cut out for them if they are going to keep up with the Boneses.
