Reviews of the latest songs from Usher, The Beach Boys, and more

Posted on

Usher, ”Scream”

Continuing his loverman-goes-to-Ibiza routine, Usher tames a sweaty house thump and coolly Frankensteins previous smashes “OMG” and “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love” into one dirty-minded adrenaline spike. It should haunt last-call revelers at seaside discos for, oh, the next three or four decades. A-Kyle Anderson

The Beach Boys, ”What’s Why God Made the Radio”

No one does nostalgia better, so it’s fitting that this harmony-laden California doo-wop reunion (the Boys’ first new single in 20 years) pays tribute to that magical antennaed box of yore. But it still feels a little sad; someone should really tell them about Spotify. BMelissa Maerz

Wiz Khalifa, ”Work Hard, Play Hard”

Free of guest verses, shouty DJs, air horns, and other flashy hip-hop gimmicks, this self-help single offers three-plus solid minutes of Wiz showing off his considerable employee-of-the-month skills. Better luck next time, Cathy in accounting! B+Ray Rahman
