Beasts of the Southern Wild won the hearts of audiences — as well as the Grand Jury prize — at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. First-time actor Quvenzhané Wallis (pronounced Kwah-VAHN-Jah-Nay) plays a fierce girl named Hushpuppy who tries to save her father and herself from the biblical flood that threatens her Delta home. The fable incorporates imagery that tests the credibility of her circumstance but inflates the poetic wonder of her heroic odyssey. Watch below.

The film, from first-time director Benh Zeitlin, will open in theaters on July 29.
