The premiere of ABC’s new comedy Don’t Trust the B—- in Apt. 23 started solid, if unspectacular, in the ratings Wednesday night.
The critically well-liked comedy delivered 7 million viewers and a 2.9 rating in the adult demo. That’s down 29 percent from its Modern Family (10.3 million, 4.1) lead-in, yet up 16 percent from the average of Happy Endings in the slot. ABC points out this is the highest retention of a Modern Family audience in a year in this slot.
One can’t help but wonder if this show might have received more premiere sampling if it had launched earlier in the season before months of 2 Broke Girls and New Girl explored somewhat similar concepts (though tonally each show is quite different). Basically: This a workable launch rating, but one wishes it were higher. Lead-ins The Middle (2.1) and Suburgatory (2.1) were steady, though Modern Family was down 9 percent.
Fox’s American Idol (4.9) led the pack, rising slightly. CBS’ Survivor (2.6) fell to a low, followed by Criminal Minds (3.0) and CSI (2.3). ABC was third. NBC’s Off Their Rockers (1.6) and Best Friends Forever (0.9) block dipped from last week, followed by Rock Center (0.6) and Law & Order: SVU (1.6).
