Teen idols, assemmmmble!
In a move clearly designed to make Twitter, Tumblr, and teen girls simultaneously explode, Justin Bieber has hit the studio to record a new song with Carly Rae Jepsen — and maybe One Direction too.
Two days ago, “Call Me Maybe” Jepsen told MTV News that she and Biebs collaborated on one song together when they first met in the studio. “It’s not too dance-y,” she explained. “It’s more intimate. It’s a duet.”
And yesterday, One Direction’s Niall Horan tweeted, “In the studio with our boy @justinbieber last night, it’s gona sound great!” Fellow bandmate Liam Payne corroborated the story with a tweet of his own: “Got a first listen to justin biebers new album yesterday wowww big songs!!! Its gunna be a smash… Expect the unexpected.” Bieber responded: “thanks buddy. good chillin with u guys.”
While, it’s currently unclear whether 1D actually did any recording with the “Boyfriend” singer (e-mails to their respective reps have not been returned), Bieber’s manager Scooter Braun tweeted on March 10, “[A collaboration between Justin and One Direction] is very possible. He likes them and thinks they are good dudes.” (Interestingly, though, Braun also manages 1D’s boy band rival The Wanted, so we’ll see if this actually happens.)
Either way, it appears that the teen-pop acts currently dominating the Hot 100 — Bieber’s “Boyfriend” debuted at No. 2 and was downloaded 521,000 times in its first week, while One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful” and Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” both jumped into the Top 10 this week — may be joining forces to exert total domination over the music industry.
Ah, it feels like 1999 all over again! (For those of you who were born before 1999 and remember.) Readers, what do you think? Let us know in the comments.
