We get yet another blurry glimpse of these aliens (isn’t that always the way) in the new Japanese trailer for the movie, along with a shot of a fretting Gwyneth Paltrow as Tony Stark’s majordomo, and a good long look at the helicarrier for S.H.I.E.L.D.
Have a look-see for yourself.
Writer-director Joss Whedon has said the army of invaders who help Tom Hiddleston’s villainous trickster god Loki take over the planet will not be Skrull shapeshifters, and will not be the Kree — two of the major alien races in the larger Marvel Universe. However … these critters kind of look like the Kree, don’t you think, Marvel geeks? At least in images like this one. Check out those helmets.
In any case, we get Jeremy Renner’s uncanny archer Hawkeye actually saying a line (!!!), although it’s only: “I got ’em.” But as he slides through the rubble, dodging a blue laser blast, we see a couple of these helmeted bad guys taking cover around some demolished vehicles.
Looks like a Kree, acts like a Kree, smells like a Kree … But the filmmaker says it’s not, and my guess is the public at large couldn’t care less. The “What kind of aliens are they, Joss? What kind? What KIND??” is really a pee-pee dance that only comic book die-hards are doing. Still, it’s fun to speculate. We’ll get our answer soon enough when the movie comes out May 4th.
Meanwhile, another familiar face makes a front-and-center appearance in this trailer: Paltrow’s Pepper Potts. She doesn’t get a line (welcome to Hawkeye’s world), but she does get to stand up slowly and worry beautifully. In this trailer, which you can see here, the shot is part of a montage involving the initial alien attack on New York City (and presumably the rest of the planet.)
A gargantuan electric blue portal opens in the sky, and these creatures swoop down (right over the clearly marked Stark building), which is where we can assume Pepper is getting a front-row seat to Armageddon.
Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige has said that The Avengers will not significantly involve the supporting cast from the other tie-in movies (Natalie Portman’s love story with Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, for example, will not be a major plot point) but that doesn’t rule out cameos, and now we know Paltrow, at the very least, is among them.
Cobie Smulder’s Agent Maria Hill appears in this trailer and also gets a line, even better than poor Hawkeye’s: “Who would bring those people together and not expect what happened.”
Well, what happened? Tell us! Oh damn, there goes that impatient pee-pee dance again.
The other major revelation in this trailer is an overhead shot of the S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier. Again, longtime fans need no explanation, but those unfamiliar with the Marvel base of operations for The Avengers (and those who are sticklers for the laws of physics) may not yet have their heads fully wrapped around this concept.
In this Japanese trailer, we see that it is essentially an aircraft carrier with giant propellers — in other words, a helicarrier. It’s everything the name implies.
In earlier trailers, we’ve seen Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, Chris Evans’ Captain America, and Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner (a.k.a. The Hulk) greeting each other on the deck of an aircraft carrier, but now my guess is that was no aircraft carrier. Or maybe it was, but then the propellers kicked in and the aircraft carrier floated up out of the water. Oh yeah, we get an image of that happening, too.
So maybe those aren’t the Kree. In The Avengers, things are often more than they seem.
