The movie in theaters right now is called Being Flynn, but settling on that name meant getting through a lot of BS. Writer-director Paul Weitz‘s film, starring Paul Dano as a young man who discovers his long-lost father (Robert De Niro) in a homeless shelter, is based on the memoir Another Bulls— Night in Suck City by Nick Flynn. ”The MPAA wouldn’t let us use any version of ‘bulls—,”’ Weitz says. ”We called it Welcome to Suck City, but [Focus Features] tried to get people to go to a screening [and] they didn’t want to be welcomed to ‘Suck City.”’ Although the title of Being Flynn (which also stars Julianne Moore as Flynn’s mother) is tame, Weitz says it works. ”Nick always felt ambivalent about his last name, because he didn’t know his dad,” he says. ”Now he’s embraced this part of his life.”
