All fans ever wanted was a shot of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, the Hulk, Black Widow, and Hawkeye all together, backing each other up, and preparing to kick bad-guy ass.
At the end of the new trailer for The Avengers, out May 4, we finally get that — if for only a moment.
We also get a sneak peek — again, only for a split second — of the alien invaders who accompany the villain Loki (Thor‘s Tom Hiddleston) in his conquest of Earth.
Click through to watch, and let us know what you think so far about Joss Whedon’s take on the iconic Marvel superhero team.
From what this trailer shows, the movie begins with the world at war with alien invaders. We already know Loki is the bad guy of this piece, and that he’s planning an invasion of earth after being exiled from the celestial realm of Asgard (again, see the conclusion to Thor), but that now seems to be the prologue rather than the climax of The Avengers.
Marvel Studios is doing a great job of hiding the alien invasion force from fans. We see fire rain from the sky, and later in the trailer we catch a glimpse of the extraterrestrial army on flying machines swooping through the city canyons of Manhattan.
They will surely be drawn from classic Marvel lore, but are they the Skrull? The Kree? Something else?
For those not-so-invested in comic-book minutiae, the big thrill of the movie is seeing the stars of all the other Marvel movies getting together for one big job. Near the close of the trailer, Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner warns: “We’re not a team. We’re a time bomb.”
Granted, he’s the most unstable of all of them, with the Hulk’s rage being a secret S.H.I.E.L.D. weapon that is definitely powerful, but not so easy to aim. We see him catching a falling Iron Man, and caroming off the side of a building while doing it, but we all know Hulk would rather be smashing than saving.
The trailer also gives us shots of Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor beating the crap out of each other in the woods. It looks like they’re ganging up on Thor, perhaps to bring him in to the team. (Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow certainly has no problem using force to make Banner enlist.)
By the end of the trailer, we get the big reveal: Everybody together, working as a team.
Time bomb defused — or just thrown in the right direction?
