Nothing was taboo to Otto Preminger. At a time when folks swept things under the rug, he tackled heroin addiction in The Man With the Golden Arm, closeted homosexuality in Advise & Consent, and sexual violence in Anatomy of a Murder (1959, Not Rated, 2 hrs., 41 mins.). Just out in a tasty Criterion edition, the courtroom drama stars James Stewart as a country lawyer defending a military man (Ben Gazzara, who died this month) accused of killing his wife’s rapist. It’s a daring, cynical gem. And check out the EXTRAS focusing on Duke Ellington’s jazzy score and Saul Bass’ famous opening credits. A-
