With Jason Segel’s love affair with the Muppets, and Neil Patrick Harris making the hosting rounds, it was only a matter of time before How I Met Your Mother’s Josh Radnor got in on the extracurricular fun.
Radnor will be writing a memoir titled One Big Blissful Thing. According to the Amazon description, the book will be:
The story of one man’s unlikely spiritual awakening—this is Eat, Pray, Love for those who would rather be reading McSweeney’s. Josh Radnor grew up in Ohio. He was driven to school in a big yellow bus. He watched The Cosby Show and John Hughes movies. He also went on to become a successful actor in Hollywood. How then, in 2007, did he end up drinking an indigenous plant medicine called ayahuasca with a shaman in Brazil?
For the uninitiated, ayahausca is a “medicinal and magical drink incorporating two or more distinctive plant species capable of producing profound mental, physical and spiritual effects when brewed together.” So basically, this is a drug memoir not from Steven Tyler, but Ted Mosby.
I have not read the book yet. And you know what they say about judging a book by its cover description. But, much like Radnor’s film HappyThankYouMorePlease, which he wrote, directed, and starred in, it sounds a little pretentious: “Eat, Pray, Love for those who would rather be reading McSweeney’s.” I get going on a journey, having a life-changing experience, etc. But doesn’t this description sound a bit like your friends from college who went abroad and then they constantly tell you how it totally changed their life, and now the trip is all they talk about?
Or, more specifically to Radnor, that How I Met Your Mother episode where the gang attends a snooty party and Radnor’s character knows he’s being super pretentious, but he just can’t stop? It sounds like that Ted Mosby is writing this book.
Readers: Intrigued? Are there any other TV stars you hope make the jump to memoir author? Or won’t?
