The Golden Globes don’t just kick off the 2012 awards season, but the ceremony also marks the unofficial start of the celebrity-fashion season. Deciding who wore what best on the red carpet is just as exciting and important to some as declaring those magic words, “And the award goes to… ”
Recent red carpet all-stars have included the likes of Mila Kunis, Zoë Saldana, Lea Michele, Natalie Portman, Anne Hathaway, Diane Kruger, Sofia Vergara, and Michelle Williams, who could just as easily reclaim those bragging rights this year — she’ll be an awards-show perennial once again thanks to her work in My Week With Marilyn. Or is someone else poised to take over as this year’s fashion icon in Hollywood?
Much like Williams, fellow fashion-savvy stars like Zooey Deschanel and Kristen Wiig, who pull off quirky chic, or Emma Stone and Claire Danes, who combine classic looks with modern sex appeal, could have just as great a year on the red carpet as they did on screen. Then again, 2011 scene-stealers like the dark and sexy Rooney Mara could make daring, genre-changing choices on the red carpet, just as she did in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo; Shailene Woodley, who pulled off the nearly impossible feat of looking better than George Clooney, could be a breath of fresh air on the red carpet as well; and Jessica Chastain, who was everywhere in 2011 (and thank goodness for it; look at the stunning ensemble she wore to the premiere of The Help), or Viola Davis, who practically defines effortless beauty and class, could just be 2012’s fashion darling.
Of course, 2012 could break with convention — a gentleman could very well be this year’s red carpet all-star. It’s not such a far-fetched notion when there’s the likes of absurdly handsome sharp-dressed fellas like Michael Fassbender (who we were used to seeing without clothes in 2011, but we suppose we could get used it) and Ryan Gosling, whose head-turning attire made guys everywhere rethink their own wardrobes. (We wouldn’t be surprised to see some sweet scorpion jackets on the red carpet, either.)
But who do you predict will be this year’s red-carpet star? Vote in the poll below and then tell us in the comments section! And, of course, before and after the Jan. 15 ceremony, be sure to check out EW’s coverage of the 2012 Golden Globes here.
