Last week, Saturday Night Live featured a sketch about Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow, in which Jesus (Jason Sudeikis) appeared and told Tebow (Taran Killam) to “tone it down” with his religious zealotry. Since airing at nearly 1 a.m. on Sunday morning, the skit has become an Internet sensation (not unlike, say, the Tebowing meme). It’s also drawn fire from religious commentators, who think it was marked by bias against Christians. Watch the video and learn about the Christian leaders’ accusations below.
Televangelist Pat Robertson in particular called the skit part of a tide of “anti-Christian bigotry that is just disgusting.” He railed, “If this had been a Muslim country and they had done that, and had Muhammad doing that stuff, you would have found bombs being thrown off and bodies on the street.” He said of Tebow, “This man has been placed in a unique position, and I applaud him. God bless him.”
What do you think, PopWatchers? Do you think SNL‘s writers are guilty of bigotry, or did you think it was an appropriate satire?
