Lately she has been a chubby panda’s tiger pal, a sophisticated European lady, and in real life moonlighting as a first-time screenwriter and director, but signs point toward Angelina Jolie preparing to get back into femme fatale mode.
Universal has signed on to release an untitled new action thriller from filmmaker Luc Besson (The Fifth Element, La Femme Nikita) starring Jolie in an unspecified role. Although plot details haven’t been revealed, sources close to the production compare the story to Besson’s beloved 1994 assassin saga Leon: The Professional, and say it will also have a sci-fi/fantasy element a la Inception.
Jolie is about to debut her Bosnian War drama In the Land of Blood and Honey, and is also expected to take on the role of Cleopatra in a historical epic about the Egyptian ruler being produced by Scott Rudin.
Besson’s film is likely to come first, with shooting set to begin in Paris this April.
Universal has picked up 80 percent of the worldwide distribution rights to the film, which is being produced by EuropaCorp.
