Savor the image to the right, Kardashi-fans. It may be your last chance to see Kim Kardashian in her Hepburn-inspired wedding gown. Fresh off the news that Kardashian has filed for divorce from Kris Humphries, her husband of 72 days due to “irreconcilable differences,” E! (home to Keeping Up With the Kardashians) is considering pulling all repeats of their four-hour, two-part marital spectacular Kim’s Fairytale Wedding: A Kardashian Event from the air. And in other news from the bizarro land that results from the collision of reality with “reality,” Kelly Ripa and Nick Lachey dressed up as the presumably happy couple for this morning’s Live! Halloween show just an hour before the divorce was confirmed. See Ripa and Lachey’s unfortunate (but hilarious) costume and learn more about E!’s programming quandary after the jump.
Consider E!’s deck effectively shuffled. Not only are execs in heated discussions as to whether they should find new programming to fill in for scheduled repeats of Kim’s Fairytale Wedding, they now have to consider how to handle Humphries’ appearance on the forthcoming season of Kourtney & Kim Take New York (premiering Nov. 27). Certainly, this scenario doesn’t carry the gravity of Bravo’s dilemma (and ultimate call) in the wake of Russell Armstrong’s August suicide, but even Kardashian cynics have to admit watching the short-lived “fairytale” is at least weird, if not altogether icky, in light of this morning’s announcement.
As for Ripa and her Regis stand-in, the on-air pair pulled out all the stops as Lachey wore stilts to show off the dramatic height differential between the petite reality star and her towering NBA star husband.
It was a joke they couldn’t possibly have realized would turn twisted moments after the show finished filming. To be fair, the stilt shtick was only one of nine costumes Ripa and Lachey wore — others included Kate Middleton and Prince William, Ronnie and Sammi from Jersey Shore, Chaz Bono and Lacey Schwimmer from Dancing With the Stars, characters from Pan Am and Toddlers & Tiaras, and Justin Bieber — but the Kardashian costume is sure to be the one generating talk for some time.
What do you think, PopWatchers? Does the divorce news spoil Ripa and Lachey’s costumes for you, or does it make them that much funnier? (For those of you who don’t see the humor, you can get all kinds of solemn this afternoon at 4:15 p.m. EDT as heartbroken New Yorkers hold a vigil outside SoHo’s Dash location. Even if you don’t live in the tri-state area, you can light a candle for love!) What about E!’s dilemma? Do you think the network should continue showing the doomed nuptials, or should they yank them from the air out of respect? Does this development spoil the spectacle for you, or does it make you even more interested in watching the “fairytale” — if only so you can get your schadenfreude on?
