New 'Hugo' trailer spotlights Ben Kingsley, transcendant sadness of childhood

Hugo represents an interesting marketing challenge: It’s a film for children with a nice Holiday gloss, directed by a director better known in recent years for the freakish Shutter Island and the bullet-in-the-brain ballet known as The Departed. The newest trailer for Hugo shifts from youth-group whimsicality into pure spectacle, while also spending a little bit more time with Ben Kingsley. Kingsley, of course, plays George Méliès, the French cinematic pioneer, and what’s more marketable than the primordial days of cinema? Also, did you realize that between Hugo, Contagion, and Sherlock Holmes 2, Jude Law will have starred in three major releases this year? That’s halfway to his 2004 six-film record.
