Ray Aghayan, fashion icon and life partner of designer Bob Mackie, has died at the age of 83, reports People. His work was featured on legendary performers including Diana Ross, Barbra Streisand, Judy Garland, Lucille Ball, and Lauren Bacall.
Iran native Aghayan moved to Los Angeles when he was in high school, ultimately turning to fashion design after dabbling in many areas of theater. After convincing the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences to fashion’s role in TV, he won the first ever Emmy for Costume Design in 1967. He shared the honor, for Alice Through the Looking Glass, with Mackie, his assistant at the time. Aghayan received three Oscar nominations over the course of his career, first for 1969’s Gaily Gaily, then in partnership with Mackie on Lady Sings the Blues (1972) and Funny Girl (1975). He is survived by Mackie.
